Following the shocking events in Israel, the European Commission has decided to extend the deadlines for some calls for projects under the Horizon Europe framework programme. This concerns those funding programmes where the deadline for submission of proposals was about to expire. Two European Innovation Council (EIC) funding instruments are also affected:
In a press release dated 18 October 2023, the EU Commission writes:
“With this extension, we offer our support to those affected by the recent hostilities. Our research community believes in inclusivity, resilience, and collaboration, and we are devoted to ensuring that each organisation has equal chances. Our thoughts are with you, and we wish you safety and peace, above all.” (Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth).
The aim of the extension is to support those affected and give them the opportunity to receive funding despite the current challenges. Furthermore, according to the EU Commission's press release, all other applicants should also be given the opportunity to adapt their application documents.
In addition to the two funding instruments of the European Innovation Council (EIC), the deadline extension also affects the funding programmes of the European Research Council (ERC):
For the ERC Starting Grant Call, the new deadline is now 7 November 2023, and for the ERC Synergy Call, the new deadline is 15 November 2023.
