Time is running out: companies with a total energy consumption of more than 7.5 GWh have until 18 July 2025 to implement an energy management system. That's why swift action is needed now.
While energy management has been voluntary for many companies up to now, the amendment to the Energy Efficiency Act (Energieeffizienzgesetz, EnEfG) passed in 2023 is now forcing many companies to introduce a certified system. As a rule, energy consumption of more than 7.5 GWh per year affects medium-sized to large companies: businesses with energy-intensive production processes or medium-sized industrial companies, for example. If such companies have not yet introduced an energy management system, they are now under pressure to use the remaining time effectively. This is because implementation must be completed by 18 July 2025 at the latest.

Key steps in the introduction

The introduction of an energy management system is a structured process and requires the fulfilment of various tasks. Below is a brief summary of the main steps:
  • Setting up a management cycle (PDCA cycle): The ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ (PDCA) approach is a continuous improvement process that ensures that energy management goals are not only achieved but also optimised in the long term.
  • Creation of a management handbook: A handbook serves as a guide for all parties involved and describes in detail the objectives, measures and responsibilities in energy management.
  • Energy assessment including the development of an energy baseline and energy performance indicators: The aim here is to analyse current energy consumption and define key figures that make it possible to measure progress in energy efficiency.
  • Operating the management system and implementing the PDCA cycle with the energy team: After implementation, the system is put into operation and continuously improved to ensure that efficiency gains are sustainable.

For companies, the introduction of an energy management system is associated with a high level of technical and organisational effort. This requires not only capacities but also expertise to ensure that the standard-compliant requirements are met and that added value is created in the long term. This is where a service provider can be of advantage.
