Space technologies are no longer confined to realm of space exploration. They show up in daily lives far more often than most people realize. From highly resilient materials, smart sensor systems to specialized software — numerous innovations originally developed for use in space are now finding their way into medical technology, mechanical engineering and mobility.

This is exactly where ESA Spark Funding comes in. The European Space Agency’s (ESA) funding program supports companies in transferring space technologies into other industries. But the reverse is also possible: bringing technologies developed in industries outside of space into the space sector.

It’s a genuine give-and-take: Space technology benefits from innovations of non-space sectors, while companies, in turn, can open up new business opportunities in the space sector.

As the central point of contact, the ESA Technology Broker supports companies from the initial idea to matching them with the right partners to identifying appropriate funding opportunities. The goal is to turn innovations faster into market-ready products and services and to accelerate technology transfer between the space sector and industry.

+++ Who is the ESA Technology Broker? +++

The ESA Technology Broker Germany is part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) technology transfer program. It brings together companies, research institutions and startups with suitable technologies and partners and supports the transfer of innovations from the space sector to other industries — or vice versa. In addition, the Technology Broker provides information on funding opportunities such as the ESA Spark Funding and supports companies from the initial idea through to the application process.
The German Technology Broker is EurA AG in collaboration with cesah GmbH. They fulfill this role on behalf of ESA.

What is ESA Spark Funding about?

Innovations often arise when existing technologies or knowledge are applied in a new context. This leads to transfer-based innovations resulting in new products and processes benefiting businesses and society alike. It is this kind of transfer that ESA Spark Funding supports.

The focus is on projects that further develop existing technologies and open up new markets. Funding covers, for example, feasibility studies, technical adaptations or the development of initial prototypes.

Projects are supported in two ways:

  • Spin-off: Space technologies are further developed for applications on Earth.
  • Spin-in: Technologies from other industrial sectors are adapted for the use in space.

Examples of technology transfers that have been implemented in the past:

  • Plasma technology for wound healing
  • Antimicrobial coatings for plant cultivation
  • Cleanroom technology for industry and hospitals

Who can apply?

The program is open to companies of all sizes and across all industries. A particular focus is on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are developing innovative products or processes and wish to tap into new business areas. Research institutions can be involved as project partners and contribute their expertise to the development process.

What is funded and to what extent?

Funding is available for technology transfer projects with a duration of up to twelve months. The funding rate is 75%. For a project budget of €80,000, companies can therefore receive a grant of up to €60,000.

Funding is provided, for example, for projects that

  • use sensors originally developed for space for medical applications,
  • apply new materials from the space industry in mechanical engineering,
  • further develop robotics or AI solutions for space applications, or
  • develop new products based on existing space technologies.

Lean, fast, and straightforward — that’s how the funding program presents itself. Extensive applications are not necessary. About 10 pages are sufficient. And the process moves quickly from there — the project can get underway just a few weeks after submission.

Why is this program worthwhile and who is it for?

Often, the potential for innovation already exists within a company; it’s just the right application that’s missing. This is exactly where ESA Spark Funding comes in. It provides the financial flexibility to test new ideas and take the first steps in development with lower risk, thereby smoothing the path from concept to the first market-ready prototype.

In addition, companies benefit from the following advantages:

  • Grants for development and adaptation work,
  • Access to ESA’s network and expertise,
  • Support with technology transfer and
  • better opportunities to tap into new markets.

For technology-driven companies — and SMEs in particular — this can provide a significant boost to bringing innovations to market more quickly and thereby strengthening their long-term competitiveness.

How the application process works

ESA Spark Funding is organized as an open call, meaning companies can submit their own project ideas at any time. Applications are evaluated several times a year; the next deadline for submissions is September 21, 2026.

In addition to the application itself, applicants are invited to present their idea to a panel of experts in an online pitch.

For a successful application, it should be clearly evident:

    • what the innovation consists of,
    • how the technology transfer will be implemented,
    • what market potential the project has and
    • how the results will be commercially exploited in the future.

What support you’ll receive from us as technology brokers

More often than not the biggest challenge isn't the technology itself - it is demonstrating its innovation potential. Funding programs place high demands on both the project description and on commercialization exploitation plans.
This is exactly where our experts come in. Together with you, we assess whether ESA Spark Funding is a good fit for your project, develop a tailored funding strategy and guide you through the application process.
Our support doesn't stop once your project is approved — upon request we support you for example, with project management or grant reporting. This allows you to focus on developing your innovation while we take care of the administrative tasks.

Conclusion

ESA Spark Funding offers companies the opportunity to further develop technologies across sectoral  boundaries and bring innovative ideas to market more quickly.
For SMEs in particular, the program can be a key building block in driving technological developments forward whilst keeping risks manageable.
Structuring your application early on and taking the funding requirements into account sets you up for success.
