On 10 April 2024, the European Commission gave the green light for federal funding for industry and climate protection (BIK). The BIK promotes climate-friendly investment and research, development and innovation projects in industry, particularly in the SME sector. The funding for companies can amount to up to 200 million euros, with the federal states bearing one third of the costs. The programme replaces the "Decarbonisation of Industry" programme, which expired at the end of 2023.

In future, the Federal Funding for Industry and Climate Protection (Bundesförderung Industrie und Klimaschutz, BIK), will support projects in all industrial sectors that reduce CO2 emissions by at least 40 per cent compared to previous emissions by converting their processes from fossil fuels to electricity or renewable hydrogen. Projects with an investment volume of 500,000 euros or more are eligible for funding in the case of small and medium-sized companies, and one million euros or more in the case of large companies.

It replaces the "Decarbonisation in Industry" funding guideline, which expired on 31 December 2023, and consists of two modules:
  • Module 1: "Decarbonisation of industry" funds decarbonisation projects that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector as extensively and permanently as possible.
  • Module 2: "Promotion of CCU/CCS" promotes the application and implementation of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), including application-oriented research and development.

Funding is to start as soon as the national procedure for adopting the directive has been finalised. The BIK will supplement the funding offered by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz) and close a gap for smaller-scale decarbonisation projects. In addition to the climate protection contracts launched by the Ministry in mid-March 2024, which focus on large-volume projects, there will also be a specific funding offer for industrial SMEs and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Be one of the first to benefit from the new funding! Feel free to contact us and arrange a non-binding consultation on funding in Germany.
