The need for energy supply from renewable resources is becoming increasingly urgent in today's world. The energy transition requires not only a switch to climate-friendly energy sources, but also an increase in energy efficiency in existing buildings. One efficient way to achieve this is to connect to a heating or building network. This not only offers financial advantages, but also a reduction in the CO2 footprint.

What are heating and building networks?

Heating and building networks are innovative infrastructure systems that supply several buildings centrally with heat from renewable energies. There are two types of network:

Building networks

  • Supply 2 to 16 buildings (up to 100 residential units)
  • Minimum share of renewable energies: 65%

Heating networks

  • Supply 17 or more buildings (from 100 residential units)
  • Minimum share of renewable energies: 75%

Heating networks also include, for example, local heating networks, which are particularly suitable for small and medium-sized projects, e.g. in rural areas or new urban districts. Local heating networks often use nearby biogas plants or solar installations as renewable energy sources.

Whether it's a heating network or a building network, connecting a building can not only reduce energy consumption and operating costs, but also increase living comfort and the value of the property.

Funding for heating and building networks

Attractive funding makes both the construction of a heating and building network and the connection of a building to a network economically interesting. The financing of such projects in Germany is supported by extensive funding programmes. Funding can be applied for through the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) (state development bank), the Bundesförderung für effiziente Gebäude (BEG) (federal funding for efficient buildings) and the Bundesförderung für effiziente Wärmenetze (BEW) (federal funding for efficient heating networks).

Important:

To apply for funding, you need to involve an energy efficiency expert who is authorised by the German Energy Agency (DENA). This expert will assist you with the application, prepare the necessary supporting documents and ensure that the technical requirements are met.

Amount of funding

The funding covers up to 70% of the total eligible costs. This significantly reduces investment costs and makes the conversion affordable for many owners.
