Electromobility in local public transport (ÖPNV) is being used in practical trials and regular operations in more and more companies across Germany. EurA has managed to serve around €13 million in funding for public transport companies from all over Germany to procure electric buses in 2020. This is because the public transport companies involved in this joint project, which come from all over Germany, have all set their sights on converting their bus fleets to alternative drive systems in the coming years.

Project partners in the "SeNSA" project

A total of four partners are involved in the "SeNSA" project. At various conferences of public transport operators, they decided to purchase electric buses across the federal states in a joint project and thus to conduct a dialogue and exchange of experience on electric buses. In this way, the exchange and cooperation between large companies as well as small and medium-sized companies in public transport was intensified and expanded over the course of the project.

Autokraft GmbH

Autokraft GmbH is the largest bus transport company in Schleswig-Holstein. It operates regional bus services in Schleswig-Holstein as well as full or partial public transport in several districts and some cities. Autokraft GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of DB Regio AG. With around 735 employees and more than 850 buses, Autokraft transports approximately 40 million passengers per year (as of January 2022).

With the project, Autokraft will electrify many of its urban and interurban lines throughout Schleswig-Holstein and thus also use the e-buses in the cities affected by NOx pollution (Kiel, Norderstedt). The new acquisition will replace older diesel models made by Mercedes-Benz and MAN. Autokraft will also decide together with its public transport authorities which vehicles will now be procured during the course of the project.

Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH (NPDG)

The Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH (NPDG) is a shipping company on the island of Pellworm. The NPDG shipping company is a privately owned transport and island supply company and is responsible for the ferry connection between the North Sea island of Pellworm and the mainland all year round. This also includes the transport of goods between the island of Pellworm and the mainland. With 25 employees (as of January 2022), Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH fulfils the full range of public transport services on the entire island. NPDG also operates local public transport on the island with two scheduled buses.

The NPDG plans to completely electrify the operation of the island line on the island of Pellworm through this measure and to convert the entire operation to battery-electric bus vehicles in the medium term through the replacement procurement of further vehicles.

Seger AG

Seger AG from Münnerstadt in the district of Bad Kissingen in the north of the Free State of Bavaria operates regular services between Bad Neustadt and Münnerstadt as well as replacement and contract transport for Omnibusverkehr Franken GmbH with a fleet of 38 vehicles.

By using electric vehicles, Seger AG wants to save CO2 emissions and fossil fuels in the short term and thereby secure a competitive advantage in its own region in the medium to long term within the framework of transport service contracts. The first step has now been taken with two battery-electric vehicles. Further acquisitions of battery-electric vehicles are planned for the coming years

Sylt Transport Company

The Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft (SVG) with around 50 employees and 50 buses (as of January 2022) operates daily on Sylt and covers around 1.5 million km. The promotion of electric mobility and the use of electric drives in public transport are also an important topic for the island of Sylt and are described as an area of action in the island's climate protection concept. This has the following effects for the island: Less noise pollution and no air pollution due to C02 emissions. During the course of the project, the Sylt Transport Company will purchase five battery-electric articulated trains to replace the older diesel models.

All project partners have also committed themselves to using only 100% green electricity for charging the vehicles.

Further submission of sketches to the current funding call for the procurement of e-buses in public transport took place in October 2021.

In 2022, EurA expects three more calls for funding that will deal with the procurement of e-buses in public transport. The first of these calls is expected from March 2022.

Interested public transport operators are always welcome to contact EurA if they plan to convert their bus fleets and benefit from the funding opportunities.

Make the most of this advantage!

Topics such as autonomous and electric mobility as well as local public transport have accompanied me throughout my professional life, especially through my many years of working for Deutsche Bahn. Now I have been part of the EurA family for five years and advise our clients on funding programmes in this area. I have initiated, designed and successfully implemented several large investment projects that have helped my clients realise their ideas earlier than planned. I also lead innovation networks on mobility topics and am always on the lookout for new project ideas. But I am not only at home in funding consulting. I also use my expertise in project management to support our clients in the successful implementation of their projects.
