You are an innovative SME and would like to work together with international partners in small consortia on research and development projects? Then Eurostars might be the right programme for you.

In recent years, Eurostars has established itself as a permanent institution for research-driving SMEs. Now the programme is starting its 3rd edition with new conditions and opportunities. Unlike the predecessor programme Eurostars 2, applicants no longer have to provide evidence of their past research activities. This means that Eurostars 3 is now also open to SMEs that have no previous experience in research and development.

Eurostars in a nutshell

Eurostars is an entirely technology-open programme that aims to develop innovative products, services and processes. The goal is to develop a prototype. The maximum project duration is 36 months. Furthermore, the market launch of the innovation should take place no later than two years after the end of the project.

Conditions for participation

Small international consortia from at least two Eurostars countries can participate. In addition to the 27 EU countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden), Iceland, Israel, Canada, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom are also members of the programme.

The consortium leader must be an SME and cover at least 50% of the project costs. Partners can be SMEs, large companies, research institutions or universities. With regard to the partner and country structure, it should be noted that in a project neither one partner nor one country may claim more than 70% of the total project budget. It is also important to note that the funding quota varies depending on the partner country and type of partner - for example, large companies in Germany do not receive funding. For German SMEs the funding rate is 50%, for research institutions/universities at least 65%.

Furthermore, in Germany the maximum funding per project is capped at 0.5 million euros - regardless of whether one or more German partners are part of the project.
