What exactly is the 8th Energy Research Programme?

The 8th Energy Research Programme has the overarching goal of strengthening innovation in the energy sector and promoting the development of sustainable, environmentally friendly technologies. It helps companies and research institutions to exploit their innovation potential and develop new, marketable technologies that contribute to achieving climate neutrality and a sustainable energy supply.

The funding is intended to support the transfer of research results into practice and help bring innovative solutions to market quickly and efficiently. Particularly in the field of applied research and cooperation between science and industry, great importance is attached to the practical implementation of projects.

Two-stage application process

In the 8th Energy Research Programme, the application process is a two-stage process and begins with the submission of a project outline. There is no specific deadline. If the outline is evaluated positively, a funding application must then be submitted.

As a rule, the decision for each stage is made within a few months. Once you have received your grant notification, you can start your project.

  1. Stage: Submission of the project outline

Under the 8th Energy Research Programme, companies, research institutions and other eligible applicants can submit project outlines throughout the year. The project outline serves as an initial basis for evaluating the innovation project and should include key aspects such as objectives, methodology, expected results and the contribution to the energy transition. The structure of the outline depends on the technology and must comply with the relevant funding guidelines.

After submission, a technical assessment is carried out by the responsible project management agency, which evaluates the outlines in terms of their level of innovation, feasibility and contribution to the programme's objectives. This selection process can usually take 2 to 5 months. If the outline is evaluated positively, applicants will receive an invitation to submit a full application.

  1. Stage: Submission of the funding application

Once the outline has been successfully evaluated, a detailed application must be submitted. The full application includes a detailed project description, a financing plan, timetables and information on the economic and scientific exploitation of the results.

Funding applications are reviewed by expert committees from science and industry. Among other things, the degree of innovation, technical and economic feasibility, and contribution to energy and climate policy are evaluated.

The decision on approval is usually made within 3 to 6 months after the application is submitted. The project may only officially begin after the grant notification has been received. However, in certain cases, prior consultation with the project management agency may result in approval for the project to start earlier, provided that this is within the planned project duration. This is done at the applicant's own financial risk, as there is no guarantee that approval will be granted at a later date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key factors for success in obtaining approval?

In our experience, there are a number of success factors for a positive decision on the outline and also on the application.

  • These include, first and foremost, the quality and innovative content of the project submitted. Projects that offer clear added value for the energy transition, society and the economy and develop innovative solutions or technologies in the field of renewable energies, energy efficiency, hydrogen technologies or similar fields have a better chance of receiving funding.
  • Furthermore, the technical and financial feasibility of the project as well as the experience and competence of the participating companies and research institutions are evaluated.
  • Another important point is the strategic orientation of the project. The project's contribution to the energy transition, its impact on strengthening the competitiveness of the participating companies and its benefits for the energy transition, as well as the sustainability of the planned innovation, are heavily weighted. Projects that aim for a long-term and sustainable impact have a better chance of receiving funding.

The decision on the approval of funding is made on the basis of a comprehensive assessment by expert committees. These committees evaluate the submitted projects on the basis of these criteria and select the most promising projects.

Is it possible to collaborate with companies and/or research institutions?

Yes, cooperation with other companies and research institutions is expressly encouraged and can increase the success of the project.
In exceptional cases, companies may carry out a project alone or only with associated partners.

What conditions are attached to the subsidy?

The programme's funding conditions stipulate a number of obligations. These include, for example, adherence to schedules and budgets, regular reporting on project progress, and the use of funds in accordance with the specified guidelines. In addition, specific documentation and transparency requirements may be imposed to ensure that the funds are used properly and that the project's objectives are achieved.

What deadlines must be observed?

The 8th Energy Research Programme allows for open-ended applications. You can submit your project outline at any time.

Is it possible to receive funding from other programmes at the same time?

Yes, companies can receive funding from other programmes in parallel with an 8th EFP grant, as long as this funding is not used for the same project.

Where can I find further information on the 8th Energy Research Programme?

Further information on the 8th EFP can be found on the official website of the programme or from the responsible project promoters.
