Joint Undertaking: Sustainable and European Together

Formerly known as BBI JU (Bio-Based Industries Joiunt Undertaking), the European funding program was relaunched in 2022 and its goals are now even more sustainable and bioeconomic.

Under the new name Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), the new funding calls have recently been published, setting the budget and thematic areas for 2023. Compared to the first round, the budget has now been doubled to EUR 215.5 million and covers many thematic areas. These are divided into four categories:
  • Flagship Actions for large-scale production facilities in Europe (TRL 7-9)
  • Innovation Actions for scale-up and demonstration projects (TRL 6-7)
  • Research and Innovation Actions for the development and validation of new technologies (TRL 3-5)
  • Coordination and support actions
The aim is to fund projects in the areas of research, demonstration and industrial deployment, and to foster collaboration between different actors across Europe and along the value chains - from biomass producers and waste managers to researchers and the processing industry. 
The targeted topics in this round could not be more diverse. These include:

Who can apply? 

From farmers to scientists who want to solve technological, regulatory and market challenges of the sector can join together in a European consortium and submit an application.

Are you also a key player in the biobased industry, looking for project partners, or want to submit a proposal? The submission deadline is not until September 22, 2023, but plan early to build the consortium and submit the application - We are happy to support you!
