In October, EurA was represented at the fifth European Defence & Security Conference in Brussels. Every year, high-ranking representatives from politics and industry come together at this important platform for strategic exchange on the future of European security and defence policy. The event, which attracted over 600 participants, was held in cooperation with the European Commission under the patronage of the European Parliament and was opened with a strong message from Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The defence industry is increasingly becoming a driver of rapid technological innovation. In view of current challenges – such as drones, cyber space or the need for reliable situation reports and secure communication – flexible, modular, digital and interoperable solutions are in demand. In particular, the transfer of civilian technologies to security-related applications (spin-in and dual use) offers great potential.
One example of this is Ukraine, where new systems are being deployed quickly and unbureaucratically, yet still tested and verified, to protect people and infrastructure. These agile innovation cycles show how Europe can respond more quickly and effectively to new security challenges in the future.
With this in mind, the European Commission announces in the Defence Readiness Roadmap 2030 that the Horizon Europe framework research programme and the European Innovation Council (EIC) will also promote disruptive innovation and deep tech for defence applications in the future.
The conference made it clear that Europe must take on more responsibility for its democracy and freedom. This includes establishing and maintaining strategic sovereignty – technologically, industrially and politically. Under the heading ‘Readiness 2030’ (formerly ‘ReArm Europe’), the topics of supply chain growth, public and private funding, and the need for joint research, development and procurement were discussed.
A key concern for many at the conference is the better integration of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and innovative start-ups into European security projects. EurA actively supports this through targeted innovation consulting, project development and networking with European funding programmes. Agile companies can make decisive contributions, particularly in areas such as "software-defined defence", disruptive technologies and modular system architectures.
The conference showed that the defence industry is not only a factor in security policy, but also a driver of innovation. EurA helps shape this dynamic by promoting technological solutions, networking innovative companies and actively participating in sustainable European technologies and platforms.
